Chapter 6
âWe have to get back home, Ava. We canât stay here.â
Ava looked up at Oscar with bleary eyes. She scanned the station only to find most of her colleagues had left. Only those who worked the night shift and Oscar remained. She had fallen asleep with her head cradled in her arms at her desk.
How could she fall asleep at a time like this?
âI donât want to go home,â she told Oscar.
And why would she, when she could do her work and look for Ellie from right within the station? Sure, she had been excited at the prospect of going home and away from the safe house, but what awaited her at home? It couldnât be her mom; she had gone back home. It wasnât Ellie either, she was gone and in the enemyâs clutches.
Ellie.
Since she had taken the girl in, Ava had been too lax. Ava brought her head back down onto her arms as shame crept up her spine. She was all talk, inviting Ellie into her home, and look what had happened.
Butâ¦she had to make things right. She was going to get Ellie back no matter what. She lifted her head and shook it at Oscar.
âIâll stay here for the night, but you can go home if you want. You must be so tired from todayâs events.â
Oscar looked at Ava, his head tilted, and on his face an expression she had never seen before. She didnât know what that meant, but she was too tired to try and psychoanalyze the man at that moment. To change the subject, she jerked her head to the computers that were left running during the day.
In only a few hours, Mark was able to come up with an idea to track Ellie should she appear again. Her phone may have been broken but there was no way she would have been forced to stay with the killer without any supplies of some sort.
âThatâs not a very big possibility. What if the killer just decides toâ¦to you know, d-dispose of Ellie as a way to get back at me?â
Ava hated herself for even thinking that was a possibility, but she had to ask the others around her. She had to consider all the what ifs.
Thankfully, Mark shook his head.
âNo, if the killer were out to get you, he wouldnât get rid of the one thing thatâs keeping you indebted to him. I think he plans on using Ellie as leverage, to get you off his case.â
âAre you sure?â Ava asked, her voice small and uncertain.
Oscar placed a hand on her shoulder and replied, âWell for now, this is our best bet, so, yes.â
When it was time to go home, Ava couldnât help the constant streams of what ifs that kept going through her head. What if Ellie managed to escape? What if the computers had picked her up but no one was here who could pay attention to it all the time?
âIt had to be me," Ava mumbled.
Oscar leaned a little closer.
